How to Set Slow Screensavers on macOS Sonoma

Lock screen saver in macOS Sonoma

Your Mac's lock screen is boring, but in macOS Sonoma you can add it liveliness with new available screensavers. Here's how to find them and set them up.

“[macOS Sonoma has] stunning new screensavers that show beautiful time-lapse videos of places around the world,” said Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, during the keynote at WWDC 2023. “ And when you log in, those images sit beautifully on your desktop.”

Custom screensavers bring your lock screen to life and allow you to customize it more than ever before. Originally, the lock screen consisted of a main image indicating the version of macOS you were using, but now you can change it to any of the offered screensavers.

If you want to add more personality to your Mac's lock screen and desktop, screensavers are a great way to do it.

How to set up a screensaver

Choosing a screensaver is similar to choosing a wallpaper. Moving screensavers are marked to distinguish them from regular desktop wallpaper. Here's how to find and apply a screensaver.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll down the menu until you see “Wallpaper” and tap on it
  3. Find the screensaver with the Play icon
  4. Select it to make it your desktop and screensaver

Screen saver options

You can choose whether you want it to be your screen saver and desktop background, or just your background.

As with wallpapers, there are several categories of screensavers to choose from. Available categories include:

  • Landscape
  • Cityscape
  • Underwater
  • Land

Splash Screen Shuffling Options

These categories contain different places that fit into them. This ranges from different cities, underwater locations, many animals and beautiful environmental views.

If you don't want to focus on one place, you can switch between places in the last option in the “Ground” category. You can choose how often you want the screensaver to change: every 12 hours, a day, two days, a week, a month, or constantly.

Splasher Rearrangement Time Options

However, you cannot switch between different categories. You can only move between different locations within a category.

Add more personality to your Mac

Screensavers are artistic additions that add personality to your Mac. In macOS Sonoma, they give the lock screen a sense of vibrancy and personality that wasn't there before.
