Apple's iOS 18 improves FaceTime and calling with enhanced audio modes and cinematic video effects for clearer communications. Here's how and when to use them.
FaceTime and phone calls in iOS 18 include three new audio settings, starting with Standard, the default microphone mode that’s ideal for everyday use and balanced sound.
The second is Wide Spectrum. This actually includes more background noise in the call. Wide Spectrum can make the sound more natural, making it a good choice if you’re at a birthday party and want to include all the excitement in the background.
The third one is Voice Isolation. It blocks out all the background noise and focuses on your voice. It is great for noisy places when you need to speak clearly.
Adjusting audio settings during calls
You can adjust these settings right during a call, allowing you to hear the other person better and customize the conversation to suit your needs.
- Open Control Center during a call.
- Tap Microphone Mode.
- Choose Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, Standard, or Automatic as needed.
Change video settings during FaceTime calls
Next, you can improve your screen presence during FaceTime calls in iOS 18 with changes to video settings. Add cinematic depth effects, enable real-time reactions, or adjust the lighting for a more controlled video look.
Change settings in FaceTime
- Turn on Portrait mode, which blurs the background to highlight your face.
- During a call, tap the Video tile, then the Portrait mode button.
- Switch between cameras by tapping the Video tile, then the switch camera icon for different perspectives.
Apple's iOS 18 is designed to make communication simple. With advanced audio settings and cinematic video effects, you can customize your conversations to suit any mood or situation.
