How to Bulk Delete Finder Tags on macOS

In the Finder, it's easy to get carried away with marking up files. If organizing them manually seems too complicated, you can always go back to square one.

To some, Finder tags may seem like a waste of sidebar space. According to others, every file should be labeled first. Luckily, it's very easy to return Finder tags to the state they were in when you first booted up your Mac.

One of the easiest ways to quickly clear Finder tags on macOS is through the Finder preferences menu. This will remove all tags and quickly remove them from every tagged file. It's also incredibly easy.

Removing tags from Finder preferences will remove the tag from all associated files.

1. With Finder active, click Finder in the menu bar and then preferences. Or you can press Command+.
2. Select the Tags tab.
3. Click the tag or tags you want. to delete.
4. Click the “minus” button at the bottom of the settings window.
5. Confirm your choice.

From the same menu you can also Right-click individual tags and remove them from the context menu. But you can save the tag and simply remove it from a large number of items. In this case, you have another option.

While using the Finder settings menu is reliable and gets the job done, using the context menu for many files is much more versatile. It can also be applied to much more specific cases, such as removing each orange tag only from files with red tags. This is as easy as using Finder preferences.

Using the context menu when needed provides much more flexibility.

1. Find a set of files that you want to tag or have tags disabled.
2. Select the files and right-click them.
3. Click on the color of the tag you want to delete.

For a few more options, you can also select “Tags…” option in the context menu. From here you can remove any tags that are common to the set of files. This will allow you to bulk remove tags from a set of files without deleting the tag or deleting it from each individual file.

With these two simple tools at your fingertips, you can finally reset and organize your tags. Or get rid of them completely, if you prefer.
