How to Add a Quick Link for Locations in Apple Maps on macOS

Apple Maps on macOS lets you add quick links to places in the sidebar for easy access. Here's how to add shortcuts.

Recent improvements to Apple Maps for macOS provide many new features. One of the recent improvements to Apple Maps is the ability to click on certain points of interest and then add them to the Maps sidebar as shortcuts, which Apple calls Quick Links.

When you add a quick link to a sidebar in Apple Maps, you can later single-click it and quickly zoom to that point, and a pop-up window with the point's information will instantly appear on your screen.

Map popovers in macOS include buttons for directions, routes, ratings, and details such as such as the name of the place, opening hours, telephone number and, if necessary, a link to the establishment's website.

Not all objects on Maps contain pop-up windows. Typically these are points marked with a blue circle with an icon inside.

One of the elements commonly included in pop-ups is a menu item called “Add to Favorites” with a star next to it.

If you click the Add to Favorites menu item, Maps will add the location to the sidebar on the left using a shortcut for that location. Apple calls the shortcuts “Quick Links.”

To clarify, while Quick Links are similar to the Quick View feature in macOS, they are completely different.

Quick links are added to the sidebar in the Favorites category at the top. It also adds a list of places you've recently viewed in the Favorites section of the Recent section.

To add a quick link to your favorites in Apple Maps on macOS: First, open the application in the /Applications folder and look for the location name, indicated by a blue circle with an icon inside it.

If you zoom in on the map, you will usually be able to see more places.

Click a place locator in Apple Maps.

Then click one of the blue dots on the map you're interested in to open a pop-up window with the place. . You can scroll up and down in the pop-up window to view detailed information about the location.

Scroll down to the bottom of the pop-up window and you will see a Add to Favorites menu option. Click on it to add a quick link to the Maps sidebar on the left.

You can also visit the location's website by clicking the link in the pop-up window, if available, and view its address, phone number, and email address, if that information is provided.

Select “Add to Favorites” to add a quick link.

Zoom out to any random point on the map. You can do this by holding down the Control keyon your Mac keyboard and clicking your finger on the mouse if you have an Apple Magic Mouse, or on the scroll wheel on third-party USB mice.

Finally, click the quick link you just added once in the Maps sidebar on the left. Maps instantly zooms the map back to the feature's location and displays its pop-up window again.

Select a quick link to instantly zoom into it.

To remove a quick link from the sidebar, hover over it and click the small gray button icon Information to the right of the item, then click Remove Favorites. The item will be removed from the sidebar without warning.

After adding a quick link, Maps changes the name of the Add menu item to Remove from favorites the next time you open the pop-up window.

You can also Control-click or right-click an item in the sidebar under Recents and select Delete. > menu item to remove it.

Send to other devices

If you have an iOS device connected to the same Apple account as your Mac, you can also send a quick link to other devices byControl-clickin the sidebar and selectingSend to Device in the pop-up menu. . There's also a Share menu option that lets you send a quick link to other apps on your Mac, if they support it.

Maps now also supports multiple tabs at once, and you can open any quick link in the sidebar in a new tab by selecting Open in new tab from the pop-up menu.

Quick Links are like bookmarks in your web browser, allowing you to instantly jump to where you want to go on Maps.
