One of Apple's Android apps has made it onto Google Play's list of most downloaded apps over Christmas. Here's why the 'Move to iOS' app made the top 40 and what it does.

Now that the holidays are coming to an end, new and returning iPhone users are unboxing their new iPhones and switching from Android to iOS.

Every year, iPhone sales grow significantly as customers rush to buy Apple’s flagship smartphone to give as a gift. And every year, Apple sees many new and returning users switching from Android to iPhone. Enough so that in 2015, the company created a dedicated Android app to make the process easier.

Previously, if someone wanted to move their data between platforms, they often had to resort to much more complicated methods. These included relying on cloud services or often unreliable third-party services.

This year, CNBC reported that Apple’s “Move to iOS” app had entered the top 40 apps in the Google Play Store. That’s not all that surprising — after all, many people are looking forward to setting up their new devices, but not without the assurance that all their files will come with them.

Those who want to transfer data from their Android device to a new phone can download the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store. After that, it will be very similar to transferring data between two iPhones.

During the transfer, both the Android app and the iPhone will guide you through the entire process.

When switching, you can transfer:

  • Contacts
  • Message history
  • Photos and videos from the camera
  • Photo albums
  • Files and folders
  • Accessibility settings
  • Display settings
  • Web bookmarks
  • Mail accounts
  • WhatsApp messages and media
  • Voice memos
  • Call history
  • Calendars

Apple says that some of your free apps, if they are available in both Google Play and the App Store, will also transfer. In practice, this is a guesstimate, since sometimes developers do not name the apps exactly.

According to the app's Google Store page, you'll need Android 6.0 or higher. However, AppleInsider recommends updating your device to the latest OS to ensure a relatively painless transfer. You'll need to keep the devices connected to a power source and close to each other during the process.
