Apple's push into smart home technology could see the company take on Ring with a smart doorbell equipped with Face ID, which can unlock the door by recognizing a visitor's face.
Reports of Apple's smart home plans have included displays on robotic arms and the alleged development of a camera. The latter part may not just be for typical video security, as it could eventually offer more functionality.
In its “Power On” newsletter on Sunday, Bloomberg reports that Apple is also working on a smart doorbell. It is expected to have an advanced facial recognition system, so it can identify the identity of anyone at the door.
If the system detects a tenant or someone authorized to enter the home, the camera could automatically set the smart lock to unlock, granting them access.
Such a system is expected to work with many existing third-party smart lock systems on the market that already support HomeKit. It is also possible that Apple could work with a lock manufacturer to offer an official Apple-approved system.
However, there is a chance that Apple will also not ship the camera itself. It is speculated that Apple could end up selling the technology through a third-party manufacturer like Logitech or Belkin, which already have extensive experience making camera-based accessories.
When it does eventually release, it could also use the Proxima wireless chip, which could be included in a number of other hardware upgrades coming in 2025.
The report claims that the doorbell is still in the early stages of development, with 2026 being the earliest likely release for the product.
