After years of rumors, Apple's foldable all-screen MacBook Pro may be getting closer to reality, could be offered in multiple sizes and could arrive sooner than expected.

A foldable MacBook, which could resemble a large iPad with a foldable middle section, could be released in a few years. Despite this, Apple is preparing its supply chain for production.

In a supply chain report by Ming-Chi Kuo published on Thursday, Apple is considering a 20.25-inch display option. However, it can also use an 18.8-inch display.

Theoretically, the dimensions will correspond to the equivalent physical dimensions of a 13-inch and 14-inch laptop. This will give Apple two size options to match its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines.

LG Display is considered the exclusive supplier of the panels, with mass production scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first half of 2026. This is slightly earlier than the 2027 forecast.

Kuo also expects foldable models to use M5 series chips.

Apple is committed to using crease-free panels, which requires a higher specification design for both the panel and the hinge mechanism. This could push panel and hinge costs up to around $600 to $650 per screen and $200 to $250 per hinge unless yields improve.

LGD is developing the panel for Apple, and Amphenol is developing the hinge.

Thanks to the unique display and hinge system, the cost of the foldable MacBook for consumers can be very high. Kuo suggests that the cost of materials for the foldable MacBook could be comparable to the Apple Vision Pro.

Kuo adds that Apple expects shipments of foldable MacBooks to be significantly higher than headsets, possibly exceeding 1 million units in 2026.
