Facebook today announced several updates to its Messenger platform, including Siri calling integration, new AI features, support for HD video calls, and voice and video messages.
iPhone users can now ask Siri to call or message someone within the Messenger app. “Hey Siri, message [person] in Messenger” will now work for hands-free calling. This is a feature that Apple has offered for a while, but Messenger hasn’t supported it until now.
Facebook is also adding voice audio and video messages, mirroring the FaceTime feature Apple introduced in iOS 17. Messenger users can leave audio or voice messages when a Messenger call isn’t answered.
Messenger now supports HD video calls, background noise suppression, and voice isolation for clearer call quality when using Messenger. HD is enabled by default for Wi-Fi calling, and can be added for cellular calls in Messenger’s settings.
In the near future, Messenger will support AI backgrounds in Messenger video calls. You can create a personalized AI background by tapping the effects icon in the sidebar of a video call and selecting the “Backgrounds” option.
More information about the new Messenger ads can be found on Facebook’s website.
