Dockcase takes advantage of this with its MagSafe design to place an SSD on the back of your iPhone while you record video or transfer files.
This case is one of several successful Dockcase products on Kickstarter. The company is popular for adding an LCD display to cases and other accessories for additional user information.
Dockcase MagSafe SSD Enclosure – Design
Out of the box, you get an SSD, a screwdriver, a wrist strap, a MagSafe sticker, a 10Gbps braided cable, and an expansion card depending on which NVMe you insert.
The enclosure fits in the palm of your hand, small and round. The LED display shows various stats so you always know what's going on.

The default page shows the 3-second Power Loss Protection (PLP) status, the SSD in the enclosure, the device's lifespan, and the transfer rate when connected.
A small button on the side is used to navigate the other two menus, allowing you to long press to select SSD and product information. On the product information page, you can adjust settings such as switching to read-only mode, how soon the display goes to sleep, language, and reset.
For this page, you short press to cycle through the settings and long press to confirm the change. You can also double-click on the main page to rotate the screen 90 degrees clockwise, which is handy.
The case supports both B&M Key M.2 and M Key M.2 SSDs, and my unit has an SK Hynix BC711 128GB, which is an M key type. However, the case supports up to 2TB.

The case is very easy to use, especially when most of your devices have a USB-C port. The only difficulty comes when changing settings or looking at how to
Carrying 128GB of data in a small puck with a screen in your pocket feels like a sci-fi gadget. What’s also impressive is that it transfers a 5GB file in about 5 seconds.
Another nice detail is how the display automatically changes to show you the transfer speed as you navigate through files in the enclosure or transfer them back and forth.

When the Finder copy completes, it doesn’t mean the disk cache is empty. It means that macOS has written to the disk and the cache. If the drive is disconnected right after Finder says it’s done, the file won’t be completely copied, since the RAM cache is fast but unstable and gets emptied when the power is removed.
That’s where the PLP feature comes in.
To test this, I unplugged the drive after Finder reported a large folder of PDFs was complete. The power loss protection kicked in and completed the copy without errors.
My only concern is durability due to how small the case is, as well as potential drops when attached to the back of an iPhone. That being said, I was very careful when using it this way.
