CT scans reveal phenomenal Apple Vision Pro design

Apple Vision Pro CT scan

A series of Apple Vision Pro CT scans shows how complex the headset is, and how It's all carefully designed to fit together.

Lumafield is now to CT what iFixit is to hardware removal. After exposing the cheap components in fake AirPods and revealing the complexity of the Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable, Lumafield has now examined the Apple Vision Pro.

However, this time the company examined the device by directly comparing it with others. Lumafield has done Apple Vision Pro CT scanning, as well as Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro.

“The purpose of this study is not a direct comparison or review of the product,” the company said in a blog post. “Instead, we reveal how the different design philosophies and market strategies of Apple and Meta play out in hardware design.”

In this line, the company claims that the scan revealed Apple Vision Pro, “a product that puts design first.” Lumafield says everything inside the Apple headset is “angled to make the most of the available internal space without distracting from the outer contours of the brushed aluminum frame and laminated glass front panel.”

Whereas headsets Meta show a different set of priorities, as well as a different target market. Lumafield describes Meta's design philosophy as one that focuses on ease of use and aims to democratize virtual reality by offering a headset at a more affordable price.

That's a euphemistic way of saying, that Meta headsets are cheaper than Apple's. So while Apple Vision Pro users know the battery is external, Lumafield's CT scan shows that for the Quest 3, “Meta's approach is simpler: placing the battery front and center of the headset.”

Similarly, while Apple's Vision Pro has a “compact active cooling solution with microfans”, the Meta Quest 3 is “simplified with just one fan.” The same story with sound on all these headsets.

Lumafield concludes that “the two Meta headsets demonstrate amazing cost savings” and “deliver as much as possible using as little as possible.” The company describes the Meta's “cost-effective design” as “best-in-class device value.”
