Crime Spotlight: Arrests in connection with Naperville Apple Store theft

In the latest Apple Crime Blotter report, NASA investigated thefts of iPads, stolen credit cards were used at an Apple Store, and iPhones were stolen at an AT&T store in Philadelphia.

The latest in a series of AppleInsider articles dedicated to the world of crime related to Apple.

Three accused of stealing Apple Store in Illinois in 2023

The arrests were made in one of the most notorious Apple Store robberies of the past year. According to The Daily Herald, three people were arrested for the November 2023 incident when a stolen car crashed into the Main Place Apple Store in Naperville, Illinois.

A man, a woman and a minor were detained. all are charged with burglary, theft and criminal damage to property for their alleged participation in the theft, in which $34,000 worth of items were stolen. Among them were 37 iPhones, three MacBooks and one iPad. The trio is also suspected of other crimes in the Chicago area.

Suspect wanted for using stolen credit cards at the Long Island Apple Store

Police in Suffolk County, New York, are searching for a man they believe allegedly stole a wallet from a Panera Bread store and tried to use the stolen credit cards at a nearby Apple Store.

Patch says the theft occurred in mid-March and the Apple Store was located in the Smith Haven shopping center. The man is wanted for grand larceny.

NASA is still investigating the stolen iPads

Several were used Astronaut training iPads were stolen from NASA in mid-2023. The investigation is ongoing, according to the March report.

Fedscoop writes that the July 2023 thefts were described on an internal ticket as “Houston SpaceX Unauthorized Entry Incident where 3 Crew Training iPads and 2 Crew Training iPads were stolen.”

NASA does have a “deep ability to detect, jam and erase devices,” one security expert told the publication.

On April 3, two men stole 23 iPhones from an AT&T store in Northeast Philadelphia, Fox 29 reported.

The suspects fled in a white SUV and no arrests were made, according to the report.

A man tracks a stolen MacBook at a flea market

A post by user X named Robert Graham went viral in late March after he left his MacBook on a plane and followed its cue to an Atlanta flea market:

Based on his topic, Graham made several trips to the flea market using different Bluetooth tools. The Atlanta police even contacted him, although at some point the Bluetooth signal disappeared, and as of this writing, he has not been able to return the MacBook.

He speculated that the thieves “probably read the viral tweet, saw me coming and put it in a Faraday bag or something.”

Walmart employee accused of stealing 14 iPhones

A Walmart employee in the St. Louis area was accused of stealing 14 iPhones from the store while working the night shift.

Fox 2 Now reports store management notified police about the theft. The employee then drove away and was pursued by police. After he crashed his car, he briefly fled on foot with the stolen items before he was arrested.

Two payments for stealing Apple products from cars

A man and woman, both from New York, were arrested in Delaware for a series of thefts in which Apple products were stolen from cars.

According to WDEL, police say the pair followed shoppers from the Christiana Mall Apple Store to their next stop, at which point they broke car windows and stole merchandise.

Both are charged with “multiple felonies as well as non-felony criminal mischief,” the report said.

Find my iPhone tracks down stolen car

A Florida man is charged with car theft after a woman tracked her stolen car using Find My iPhone. When the victim contacted police, they tracked down the Jacksonville man's car, according to First Coast News.

The man eventually surrendered to police and is charged with carjacking with a firearm or deadly weapon.
