In this episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, your hosts discuss even more Apple smart home rumors, talk about the new 18.3 releases and a review of the xBloom smart coffee maker.
This week on AppleInsider, we rounded up all of Apple’s latest smart home rumors and tried to put them into a timeline and strategy that made sense. We’re back at it here on the podcast.
Then we went over the recently released developer beta updates, including iOS 18.3 and tvOS 18.3. The 4 updates feature minor smart home-related changes, including support for robot vacuums.
Google has begun testing new tiered access for smart home control after it was announced in November. Your hosts theorize about how Apple might adopt a similar tactic, and how it compares to the guest access it offers now.
In related news, ElevationLab has usurped Apple's “TimeCapsule” name for its new product. The ElevationLab TimeCapsule is a case for the AirTag that extends battery life to 10 years.
Eufy has released its new Indoor Camera E30, which packs a number of impressive features for under $70. It’s a 4K camera with HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video support, 360-degree rotation, 75-degree tilt, and a microSD card for local storage.
We wrap up this holiday episode with a look at the xBloom smart coffee maker. This incredibly cool machine can use its own proprietary roasted-on-demand pods, or users can provide their own and use filters.
The machine will grind beans and brew pour-over style coffee in minutes. There are virtually unlimited settings, from the fineness of the grind, the water temperature, and the time it takes to steep.
It all works via NFC cards, including from the included app. Just tap the recipe card at the top and it will load all the recipe settings needed for that particular bean or roast.
However, this highlights Apple's shortcomings with NFC, as you can't tap your phone to load a recipe. NFC is currently limited to payments, access cards, and other similar uses.
