Apple's new iPad Air and iPad Pro cellular models only support eSIM

Apple today announced new iPad Pro and iPad Air models at its Let Loose event. There are some minor changes compared to previous generation devices that weren't mentioned during the event but are worth knowing about.


One of the differences that is worth paying attention to is the lack of a physical slot for SIM cards. On previous generation models, the ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ Physical SIM card slot included. This is no longer the case in new devices. All cellular models now support eSIM only.

This is a small but important detail for those looking to upgrade their iPad while sticking to their current cellular plan. Apple hasn't revealed the reason why it decided to remove the physical SIM card slot, but it could be a design decision related to making the devices thinner, or the need to keep them thin given all the hardware upgrades to the devices.
