Apple's iPhone 16 Series Sales in China Up 20%

iPhone 16 Pro Models

According to new data, iPhone 16 sold a fifth more units in China in the first three weeks than in 2023.

Overall iPhone 16 sales have reportedly been sluggish, but Counterpoint Research says the entire lineup has performed better in China than its predecessor so far. That’s despite the iPhone 15 lineup beating sales expectations for its 2023 launch.

As Reuters first spotted, the gains came despite local rival Huawei releasing new phones at the same time.

While overall iPhone 16 sales were up 20% year-on-year, there was a similar split in the US, where the Pro models performed better. Combined, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max sales were up 44% compared to their 2023 predecessors.

Overall, however, Apple saw a 2% year-on-year drop across all iPhone sales in China. That’s partly due to competition from Huawei, but also due to declining sales of older iPhones.

The latter is likely due to Apple Intelligence demanding newer models. Specifically, it wants the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or the iPhone 16 lineup.

Previously, analysts including JP Morgan predicted that Apple's sales in China would improve after many quarters of decline. However, the iPhone 15 lineup's strong start has fallen off significantly in China a few months later.
