The next version of the Apple Watch Ultra could gain the ability to send text messages over a satellite connection, joining the iPhone in giving consumers a standalone connectivity feature.

Apple already has a number of satellite services for communicating when you’re using your iPhone in a dead zone. New iPhone models include Emergency SOS via Satellite and Roadside Assistance via Satellite, as well as the ability to use Satellite Messaging.

While the Apple Watch doesn’t currently offer satellite functionality, the next Apple Watch Ultra update could add satellite messaging. According to Bloomberg’s sources, there are plans to include the feature in the Apple Watch Ultra 3 in 2025.

According to the plan, the Apple Watch Ultra would allow users to send messages while out of range of cellular and Wi-Fi. This could be especially useful for Apple Watch Ultra users who might use the rugged smartwatch while offline or at sea, or outside of 5G coverage.

It’s likely that, especially in some more dangerous activities, users might not necessarily have their iPhone with them. Having this feature on the Apple Watch could lead to more people leaving their iPhones at home rather than risking damage just to stay in touch.

The addition of this feature would also make the Apple Watch Ultra the first major smartwatch to offer satellite connectivity.

Sources also say that the long-awaited blood pressure monitoring feature could finally arrive in 2025. However, like glucose sensors, this feature has been delayed in the past.

There were rumors that the blood pressure feature could arrive in 2024, but the Apple Watch Series 10 launched without it. Reports claimed that the feature was not working reliably enough for a public release, even if it is limited to just detecting hypertension.
