Teams recently used Apple Watch Ultra 2 launches The Speed Project, an annual relay race covering more than 300 miles between Santa Monica and Las Vegas.

Project Speed is a grueling annual race in which teams of runners attempt to navigate the roads and highways that run through the Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

An article published by Apple on Monday tells the story of a Los Angeles Koreatown running club and a New York City seniors' running club who teamed up to participate in a punishing relay race. The 12-person team was assisted by navigators, a crew, team vans, and an Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Apple's smartwatch provided more than the usual fitness tracking capabilities, as it also helped teams track runner positions, take calls, and even gain some visibility in the dark.

“The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been our lifeline to each other,” said crew captain Cindy Le. Co-captain Jah Tecson added, “The watch was really made for the conditions we were in, especially when we were doing night runs.”

Setting up a flashlight helped participants stay safe at night because of “a lot of very aggressive drivers on the road.” At the same time, the team's logistics were also handled through the watch: dictation helped the runners react without slowing down.

The team's run was documented by three team members, who filmed on an iPhone 15 Pro Max and then edited the images in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

As the race began at 4 a.m. on March 29, runners gathered at Palisades Park in Santa Monica before everyone hit the road. The next night the team succeeded, completing the relay in 41 hours and 51 minutes.
