The Apple Watch Series 10's improved LTPO display technology is different from previous generations, and future iPhones may get a new display.

Apple updated the Apple Watch to Series 10 in early September, making a number of changes to the form factor. One of the less talked about changes is actually to the display, with Apple updating a pretty important element.

Low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) is the backplane technology that allows the refresh rate on an OLED screen to be dynamically adjusted. It’s what allows the Apple Watch to have an always-on display.

Apple’s website mentions a change to the LTPO used in the latest Apple Watch model, The Elec reports. The Apple Watch Series 10 display is listed as using LTPO3.

LTPO2, the previous generation, provided a refresh range of 1Hz to 120Hz. LTPO3 is a more gradual change that provides additional power savings while also opening the door to even higher refresh rates.

The report claims that the industry is now watching to see if Apple will add LTPO3 to a future iPhone update.

Samsung Display, a key supplier of iPhone screens, is reportedly set to begin work on a project to develop an LTPO OLED for the Apple Watch 11. This is likely to give Samsung the experience and ability to prepare for producing iPhone displays using LTPO3.

If true, this could potentially lead to a ProMotion display upgrade with an extended refresh rate range, possibly up to 240Hz. This would give iPhone displays that are similar to some high-end Android devices whose screens already operate at that refresh rate.
