Apple's environmental credentials have been praised, with the company scoring highest among retailers in the U.S. and Canada for avoiding hazardous chemicals and plastics.
The 2024 Retail Report from Toxic-Free Future looks at the environmental practices of North American retailers, specifically looking at how companies are working to protect customers from toxic chemicals and reduce plastic.
According to the 2024 results, Apple tops the list with a score of 84%, making it the only company to receive an “A” grade. Sephora is second with 69%, and Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Target follow with 65%.
The report praised Apple for its corporate commitment to using safer chemicals, including partnering with organizations in the field. Its transparency with a full materials disclosure program with manufacturers to collect material composition data was also applauded as a good initiative.
The company has also continued to limit its use of harmful chemicals, including a goal to remove plastic from its packaging by 2025. Its definition of a safer alternative also matches Washington state’s version, which has also been incorporated into product design and development.
There is also seed funding for the Safer Chemistry Investment Fund and sponsorship of chemical hazard assessments for ChemForward’s solvent and flame retardant databases, which are highlighted in the report.
“Apple, Sephora, Target, and Walmart set high standards, scoring the highest overall,” said report co-author Mike Schade. “With the holiday shopping season approaching, it’s time for more retailers to follow their lead and monitor stores.”
This isn’t the first time Apple’s chemical policies have been praised. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Apple a 2024 Safe Choice Partner of the Year winner for its testing and evaluation of chemical use in its supply chain.
