Tech geeks at iFixit have released a new video featuring a teardown of the 13-inch iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro.

A popular website has published a video showing what it calls the “destruction” of an Apple Pencil Pro and the latest iPad Pro. The video shows significant design changes to the iPad Pro that make it more repairable, but the design of the new Apple Pencil Pro is completely the opposite.

The new video follows YouTuber Phone Repair Guru's previous teardown of the M4-based 13-inch iPad Pro. The video noted that while the new iPad Pro was more difficult to get into, after split-screen, other design changes made it more repairable than previous models.

A new teardown video from iFixit confirms this about the 13-inch iPad Pro. Host Shahram Mokhtari notes that this change will save do-it-yourselfers “hours” of repair time.

In particular, the video describes in detail the procedure for removing the iPad Pro battery. Mokhtari calls this a “significant improvement” over previous versions of the iPad Pro, as it no longer requires you to remove all other components first.

Disassembling the Apple Pencil Pro

After tearing down the iPad Pro, the focus shifts to tearing down the new Apple Pencil Pro. After attempting to remove the top portion of the Pencil Pro's “eraser” by cutting it off, the owner is forced to use an ultrasonic cutter to cut through the plastic housing of the stylus, rendering it beyond repair.

Barrel electronics of the device — with difficulty — come out of the plastic case, which will allow you to take a closer look at it. The video shows two sets of magnets in the Apple Pencil Pro, as well as an inductive charging coil.

The main board release screws are extremely difficult to find and remove. However, the sensor motor that provides feedback to the device can be separated from the rest of the electronics simply by breaking the microwelding points.

The inductive charge coil is also located in the tray, which is also welded to the frame. On the other hand, the pressure gauge sensor that surrounds the bottom half of the Apple Pencil Pro is easily removable.

With a lot of force and cutting, Mokhtari was able to remove the circuit board from the bottom of the Apple Pencil Pro. The last element removed from the device was the battery.

The video describes the internal layout of the new Apple Pencil Pro as a “small” improvement over the first generation Apple Pencil. In this original model, all parts were glued into the device body with epoxy resin.

From a user-correctable perspective, the video concludes that the new Apple Pencil Pro is called an “unrepairable pile of electronic junk” after taking it apart. However, Mokhtari praised Apple for its overall “baby steps” towards greater repairability in its latest devices overall.

AppleInsider recently published a hands-on review of the 13-inch iPad Pro, along with a guide to choosing the right Apple Pencil model for you. The 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,299, and the Apple Pencil Pro starts at $129.
