Apple Pay Returns to Home Depot, Grocery Chain H-E-B Starts Accepting It

Two more retailers are joining the many others that support Apple Pay in the United States, with H-E-B adding and Home Depot quietly bringing back support to its stores.

Apple Pay will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its launch in the U.S. on October 20. Just in time for the event, two more retailers are finally rolling out the mobile payment platform in their brick-and-mortar stores.

A press release from Texas grocery chain H-E-B confirmed that 380 of its stores will be rolling out digital tap-to-pay services in a phased manner. This includes support for Apple Pay, as well as Samsung Pay and Google Pay.

Apple Pay will launch next week at flagship locations in the San Antonio area. More stores across Texas will be included throughout October and early November.

Tap-to-pay support extends to all cash registers, self-service checkouts, pharmacies, and specialty restaurants. While you won’t be able to use it at gas stations, you can use it at payment windows.

Home Depot, meanwhile, is also rolling out Apple Pay in its stores. Appleosophy’s sources have previously managed to pay with Apple Pay at some locations.

Home Depot previously said it planned to implement Apple Pay in its stores back in 2015. At the time, it was reportedly evaluating various mobile payment platforms for use in stores.

Home Depot ultimately accepted Apple Pay in its stores for a short period of time. But Apple Pay was ultimately shut down by the retailer.

Home Depot is likely finally accepting Apple Pay to meet consumer demand and keep up with its competitors. Its main competitor, Lowes, enabled Apple Pay in its U.S. locations in December 2023.

While many retailers have signed up to accept Apple Pay, including Kroger in April 2023, not all have done so. The largest company that has yet to make the switch is Walmart, which went to the trouble of developing Walmart Pay instead of accepting Apple Pay.
