Apple Passwords app debuts in iOS 18

Apple Passwords app coming to iOS 18

Thanks to the new special application, passwords will no longer be hidden in iOS 18 settings , iPadOS 18 and macOS 15.

Too many people live with one or two passwords that they use for everything. This problem is compounded by Apple's tendency to hide essential features like a password manager deep within the Settings app.

According to a Bloomberg report, everything will change with the release of iOS 18 and other new operating systems. Apple will introduce a new dedicated Passwords app for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and VisionOS 2.

AppleInsider verified the existence of such an app with people familiar with the upcoming releases. The app will replicate the functionality of the Passwords menu that already exists in Settings.

It will also get several other features, such as displaying Wi-Fi network passwords. The app also manages access keys, 2FA tokens, and potential violation notifications.

Placing the app in the foreground will increase awareness of built-in features in the Apple ecosystem. Instead of turning to less secure options that will end up getting hacked, users can rely on existing platforms on their devices.

Apple introduced password sharing in iOS 17, which allows users to create groups of passwords that can be shared with anyone. This, as well as a separate app, could impact companies like 1Password. However, Apple's simpler offering won't meet every user's needs.

The new app is expected to eventually get a dedicated Passwords app for Windows. This will help users choose Apple among alternatives if they are cross-platform users.

WWDC will be held on June 10, where all new updates to the operating system will be presented. It's expected to be a software event infused with Apple's artificial intelligence.
