iPhone sales rise in China, Apple returns in the country’s top five smartphones thanks to the iPhone 16.

Apple is going through a tough time in China as rival smartphone makers are squeezing the iPhone out of the market. Despite this, the iPhone appears to be enjoying greater consumer support.

Data released by IDC on Friday puts Apple second in the top five smartphone makers in China for the third quarter of 2024, marking the company’s return to the list. IDC attributes this to the successful launch of the iPhone 16 in the market.

Apple is listed with a market share of 15.6%, behind Vivo with 18.6%, but ahead of Huawei with 15.3%. Xiaomi and Honor round out the list with 14.8% and 14.4%, respectively.

The percentage is slightly lower than the same period last year, as Apple's share at that point was 16.1%.

While Apple's impressive return to the list is good, it's not exactly better than last year. While Chinese smartphone shipments grew 3.2% year-over-year in the period to 68.8 million units, Apple saw a 0.3% year-over-year decline.

By contrast, third-place Huawei posted 42% year-over-year growth in Q3 2024.

IDC's data isn't the only numbers pointing to an iPhone resurgence. On October 18, Counterpoint Research recorded a 20% jump in iPhone 16 sales compared to iPhone 15 sales.
