Apple is gradually releasing new firmware for AirTag

Apple AirTag

Apple has started releasing new firmware for the AirTag, making it the first update for the compact tracker since October.

The latest firmware version, version 2.0.73 and build number 2A73, will eventually be rolled out to all AirTags worldwide, but the rollout is generally slow.

As with the last update, only a small percentage, around one percent, will receive the update on day one. A higher percentage of AirTags will be allowed to download and install the firmware within a few weeks.

For the previous update, build number 2A61, the speed of the rollout meant that all AirTags were allowed to download the firmware four weeks after its release on October 31st.

Apple hasn't yet revealed what's changed in the firmware, but due to the relatively limited usefulness of the AirTag itself, it's likely an update with bug fixes and performance improvements.

Users cannot force the update to the AirTag as it will be installed automatically once the AirTag is in Bluetooth range of their iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later.
