Apple's Vision Pro production was significantly scaled back over the summer, but a new report claims there's a chance Apple could stop it entirely by the end of the year.
The Apple Vision Pro isn’t a mass-market device with huge sales compared to the rest of Apple’s lineup. The relatively low sales numbers are creating new supply chain issues for Apple that it’s still working through.
According to The Information’s sources involved in the production of components for the headset, Apple cut orders for the Apple Vision Pro earlier this summer. However, the production cuts may not end there, as it’s believed that Apple could stop assembling the headset by the end of 2024.
Part of the decision is due to having enough inventory of the headset and components to produce more to meet demand for the foreseeable future. Suppliers are said to have produced enough components to produce around 600,000 headsets.
As for Apple Vision Pro assembly, Luxshare has cut its production of the headset in half to around 1,000 units per day. Apple has reportedly told Luxshare that production may have to be curtailed by November.
Analysts believe Apple sold about 370,000 headsets in the first three quarters of 2024 and will sell only 50,000 more by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Luxshare is believed to have collected between 500,000 and 600,000 headsets, meaning it has about 200,000 headsets in stock.
One reason Apple may cut production and let existing supplies run for a while is that it is working on a new, cheaper model for consumers. The $2,000 version is expected to ship in 2026 with changes including lower-resolution displays, the loss of Eyesight, and other cost-saving changes.
Also expected is a second-generation Apple Vision Pro model, scheduled for production in the second half of 2025. If the data is accurate, Apple’s existing inventory of first-generation devices may be enough to meet demand until the second-generation iteration launches.
These plans could still change, as Apple’s Vision Products Group is still trying to figure out the best path for the hardware category. There’s always the prospect of creating smart glasses similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration, or going the “holy grail” of augmented reality glasses.
