A new report claims that Apple has reached out to Sony to bring support for handheld game controllers — and presumably more games — to the Apple Vision Pro.

Bloomberg reports that a future VisionOS update will bring support for third-party handheld controllers, including Sony’s PlayStation VR2 controllers. Apple has also reached out to third-party developers to bring more games to the Apple Vision Pro, with controller support as an incentive.

Traditional game controllers used with Xbox and PlayStation are currently supported on the Apple Vision Pro, but only for Apple Arcade games. Bringing support for VR controllers and encouraging developers to support more VR games for the platform would likely boost sales of Apple’s headset.

Support for hand controllers could expand Apple's eye and hand motion detection capabilities, attracting more developers to games and other apps. Bloomberg also suggested that Apple could go so far as to help fund more programs for the Apple Vision Pro to build more momentum for the product.

The Apple Vision Pro has sold modestly, as you'd expect from a brand-new product category without an existing mature market. Apple is believed to have sold around 370,000 units in its first three quarters of sales, with another 50,000 units expected by the end of 2024.

More importantly, people who have the Apple Vision Pro aren't using it as much as the company expected, indicating a need for better software options for it. Until recently, the company was focused on bringing its own “wand” controller to the Apple Vision Pro for more precise types of work, but now sees value in adapting VR controllers to the platform.
