By Julie Clover

Apple today released the first beta versions of the upcoming iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to test the software before release. The public betas of iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 will arrive two days after Apple released betas to developers.

Public beta testers can get the beta by opening the Settings app, going to Software Update, tapping the Beta Updates option, and toggle iOS 17 or iPadOS public beta 17. Registration on Apple's beta website is required.

iOS 17.5 is limited to new external features and focuses primarily on changes in the European Union. App developers in the EU can now add their iPhone apps to their website so that users can download them directly, without having to use the App Store.

Offer the app for download from the website in the European Union, developers must meet certain criteria. Developers must have been a member of the Apple Developer Program for two or more consecutive years and have an app that was first installed on iOS by more than one million people in the European Union in the previous year. Other requirements include notarization by Apple and publishing transparent data collection policies.

This feature is only available in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act and is not available to all users.
