Apple has a 'secret' advanced AI lab in Europe; lured specialists from Google

A new report today says Apple has created a ‘secret’ Europe's leading artificial intelligence laboratory, and it is this institution that is responsible for some of the most pioneering work in the field of artificial intelligence.

The same report states that most of Apple's artificial intelligence specialists were poached from Google, although this is not a big surprise, given the biography of the head of the artificial intelligence company from Cupertino …

Advanced AI Lab in Europe

While most of Apple's artificial intelligence team, the US-based Financial Times paywall reports that some of The company's most advanced work is carried out in a “secret” room. laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland.

Professor Luc Van Gool of the Swiss university ETH Zurich said Apple's acquisition of two local artificial intelligence startups – virtual reality group FaceShift and image recognition company Fashwell – prompted Apple to build a research laboratory in the city known as the “Vision Lab.”

Employees from Zurich participated in Apple's research into the underlying technology behind products such as the OpenAI ChatGPT chatbot. Their articles focus on increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence models that incorporate text and visual input to answer queries.

Describing any Apple lab as “secret”; seems like a tautology, the report actually states that the neighboring business didn't even know it existed. It looks like the company may have taken the same approach here as it did with some of its ill-fated Apple Car projects: using a shell company without any Apple branding.

The work described is well suited to This is shown in Apple's recent research papers on artificial intelligence. These include editing photos using text commands (which you can try yourself), creating animations from still images, and enabling ChatGPT-style generative AI to work locally on iPhone for greater privacy.

Most Apple AI experts poached from Google

The paper also conducted a research analysis to determine which artificial intelligence specialists joined Apple and where they came from. The analysis compromised LinkedIn profiles, public job listings, and published research papers.

The analysis identified at least 36 senior employees of former Google AI employees—more than three times more than any other single companies. .

This is not so surprising. Back in 2018, Apple hired John Giannandrea, who previously headed Google's artificial intelligence department. He was subsequently promoted to Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Giannandrea, of course, would know which Google AI engineers and leaders he would like to have on board.

High hopes for Apple AI in iOS 18

We expect Apple to finally give Siri a long-awaited update to its generative AI capabilities this year—with plenty to prove it. support this.

Bloomberg reported that Apple called iOS 18 one of the biggest iOS updates it has ever released, with a focus on artificial intelligence. The Financial Times particularly pointed out that this is it. Siri will be based on a ChatGPT-style generative AI model. 9to5Mac found confirmation of just that in the iOS 17.4 beta. Even CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company is “excited to share details of our ongoing work in this area [AI] later this year.”

We also recently pointed out three clues as to what Siri will do in iOS 18. It might work out.
