Apple Car Key feature coming to three new brands

Apple’s Car Key feature will soon be expanding to three new brands, according to a new report. Recent code leaks suggest that the feature will soon be supported on select Polestar, Volvo, and Audi vehicles.

The code changes were discovered by MacRumors, which reported that Apple is “preparing to launch support for digital car keys in the Wallet app for select Volvo, Polestar, and Audi vehicles.” There are no additional details on specific models or a launch timeline at this time.

The Car Key feature was unveiled at WWDC in 2020. This feature allows users to add their car key to the Wallet app, allowing them to lock, unlock, and start their car using the app. While implementation varies between car manufacturers, there are several ways to use Apple's Car Key feature:

  • Passive Entry: Walk up to your car with your device, it will unlock, start the car while inside, and walk away from the car with your device, it will lock.
  • Proximity: Lock, unlock, and start your car by holding your device close to the door handle or key reader.
  • Remote: You can use your device to remotely lock and unlock your car, as well as use other features.

The Car Key feature also includes support for Express Mode. This allows you to use your car key without unlocking your device or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The Wallet app also supports sharing your car key using services like Messages, Mail, and AirDrop.

Car Key is currently supported by models like BMW, BYD, Kia, and Mercedes-Benz. Most recently, Rivian added Car Key support to its second-generation R1T and R1S updates.
