Apple and OpenAI may add ChatGPT functionality to Siri

Perhaps against the wishes of Apple AI chief John Giannandrea, Apple and OpenAI have reportedly reached an agreement where ChatGPT will be available on iOS 18 and other operating systems in 2024.
Apple wants to bring artificial intelligence to its platforms, but it is focusing on on-device privacy-preserving models rather than the large language models (LLM) used by its competitors. So, the company is looking to partner with Google or Microsoft to bring its LLM programs to the iPhone.
According to the report, a deal has finally been struck between OpenAI and Apple. The details of the deal are unknown, but it likely means that the technologies used for ChatGPT may be available to Apple users, namely through Siri.
The OpenAI deal does not close off opportunities for other players in the artificial intelligence industry. One rumor suggested that Apple was planning to create an AI App Store, so OpenAI could be one of several companies populating such a store.
The likely driver of this compromise is internal politics, as the report states that Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy John Giannandrea said in an email in 2023 that “the last thing people need it, it’s another chatbot.” So, either Apple didn't bother with server LLM, or they started too late and it's not ready yet.
In any case, if this report is true, Apple will likely not announce an Apple-created LLM program to replace Siri. Instead, it will use server-side products such as ChatGPT to answer user questions.
For example, today, if you ask Siri about something that requires searching, Siri will send the search query to Google using an anonymous identifier. OpenAI could have a similar option for users, where requests requiring AI would pass information to ChatGPT while maintaining privacy and return a useful response read by Siri.
