Apple Admits iCloud Notes Are Gone, Explains How to Fix It

Joe Rossignol

Earlier this month, we reported that some iPhone users were temporarily losing all of their notes in the Notes app after accepting Apple’s updated iCloud terms and conditions. Now, Apple has indirectly acknowledged the issue in a new support document that outlines the steps to follow if your iCloud notes aren’t showing up on your iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro.

Luckily, it’s possible to resync notes from iCloud. Apple’s steps are nearly identical to what we shared earlier this month:

If your iCloud notes aren’t showing up on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, follow these steps.

1. Open the Settings app and tap your name.
2. Tap iCloud, then tap Notes.
3. Make sure Sync This [Device] is turned on, then check the Notes app.
4. If your notes still don’t appear, restart your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro. After restarting, check your settings again.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your iCloud Notes should appear and start syncing again on devices signed in to the same Apple account. Once syncing is complete, your previously synced content from iCloud should appear.

In September, Apple updated its iCloud terms and conditions with some minor changes, and has been notifying users in recent weeks to accept the changes. According to social media posts, the disappearing notes issue has continued to impact iPhone users since our initial coverage of the issue earlier this month.

Disappearing notes weren’t the only issue. In another new support document, Apple said that iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro users who receive an “Unable to complete action” error message when attempting to accept updated iCloud terms and conditions should update to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS and try again.
