In a surprise announcement from Pixelmator on Friday, the team behind the editing app Mac imaging software company Pixelmator has announced that it has been acquired by Apple.
Published on the company’s blog on Friday, Pixelmator shares the news that it has been acquired by Apple. The acquisition, the terms of which are unknown, brings the Pixelmator, Pixelmator Pro, and Photomator apps under Apple’s ownership.
The team has signed an agreement for the acquisition, but it still needs regulatory approval before it can be completed.
While many apps have been acquired and incorporated into Apple’s existing ecosystem before, Pixelmator insists that won’t happen immediately in this case. There will be “no significant changes” to the apps “at this time.”
Pixelmator Pro is sold on the Mac App Store for $49.99 as a one-time purchase. Photomator is sold for $79.99 as a lifetime offer, $7.99 per month, or $29.99 per year.
In theory, Pixelmator fits comfortably into Apple’s collection of creative apps for professionals. With Final Cut Pro for video editing and Logic Pro for music production, Pixelmator fills a gap in image editing.
“We’ve been inspired by Apple from the very beginning, building our products with the same keen focus on design, ease of use, and performance,” the post reads. “And looking back, it’s incredible what a small group of dedicated people in Vilnius, Lithuania, have been able to accomplish over the years.”
The team says they’ll be able to reach a much wider audience and “have a greater impact on the lives of creatives around the world.”
The blog post ends with a thank you to the users who have supported Pixelmator for 17 years. It ends, “As we enter this exciting new chapter, we can’t wait to share what’s coming next.”
