82-year-old man who was given an Apple Watch for Christmas says, they may have saved his life after he was hit by a car.

Footage of the incident at a roundabout in Kidderminster, UK, on January 19, 2024, has now been released. The stereotypical image of a British roundabout is of a large grassy island with four or more roads branching off from it, but this was a small painted circle at the junction.

Although roundabouts are rare in the United States, they have proven to be safer for both drivers and pedestrians, but in this case the circle was completely ignored. The driver turned the corner without even staying in the correct lane and crashed into 82-year-old Tony Jonesy, who was crossing the road.

Jonsey survived the incident with a broken collarbone, broken ribs and severe bruising, according to local newspaper the Shropshire Star. The newspaper also published striking, if not disturbing, CCTV footage of the incident.

The new Apple Watch, given to Jonesy less than a month ago, immediately called 911.

“I was walking back to my car, which was parked at [UK supermarket] Aldi, and was crossing the road when I felt a thud,” Jonesy told the newspaper. “”The next thing I saw was the bumper of the car in front of me… I was lying on the road and could not move.”

“Another thing I would like to note is my Apple Watch,” he continued he.”The watch detected the fall and asked if I wanted to call 911.”

“I could cancel the request by pressing a button on the side. phone,” he said, “but I left it and the phone ended up calling [UK emergency number] 999.”

Jonesy says the driver stopped and came to help, as did three other nurses on duty who were nearby. “A lot of people came out to help and that really calmed me down,” he said.

Apple Watch's fall and accident detection features have now saved the lives of countless drivers. It was introduced with the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2018.
