AirTag Gets a New Feature in iOS 18.2, Here's How to Use It

iOS 18.2 introduced a new feature for AirTags and other items in the Find My app, and it might just save you a lot of stress and hassle the next time you lose something important.

Share Item Location Feature Makes Finding Lost Items Easier

Apple's Find My app now offers a feature called Share Item Location that works with AirTags and other compatible items.

Find My already offered a feature called “Share Item” but it was designed to permanently share an AirTag with a close relative or friend. The “Share Item” feature adds the item to the contact's “Find” app so that both of you can track its location at any time.

However, the “Share Item Location” feature is different in that it is designed for temporary use and is only used if the item is lost.

How to Use the New iOS 18.2 AirTag Feature

To use the new feature, make sure you are using iOS 18.2, then follow these steps:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  2. Click the Items tab
  3. Select your AirTag or other lost item
  4. Scroll down until you see Share Item Location
  5. Follow the pop-up screens to enable sharing

Share Item Location will create a shareable link containing a map and the current location of your item.

Here's the full description from Apple:

Users can create a Share Item Location link in the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Recipients of the link will be able to view a website that shows the item’s location on an interactive map. The website will automatically refresh when a new location is available and show a timestamp of the last update.

This new addition is especially useful for tracking lost luggage, which is why Apple is partnering with airlines so they can build support into their existing customer service channels. Currently, more than 15 airlines are set to offer support soon, and several major ones are already doing so.

Important Privacy Disclaimer

Users should be aware that while Apple's system is designed to protect your privacy, the company notes that whoever you share the link with will be able to see select information about you.

The Find My app states, “The product serial number and your Apple account email or phone number will be visible.”

This is an intentional feature, since you want an airline or other third party to be able to easily contact you during the search process. But it's worth noting nonetheless.
