New report says Apple's goal for adding a camera to AirPods is to enhance features Apple Intelligence, and that the device should get a lot more health features.
The idea of AirPods with cameras has already been reported before. In particular, it was expected that it would be possible to install IR cameras that would help spatial sound, better assessing the user's environment.
Now, according to Bloomberg, the idea was shelved several years ago, but has now become a priority again due to Apple Intelligence. It is unclear , how cameras could help with AI, but the report says the feature is now a priority for both Apple's Intelligence and AirPods hardware teams.
However, cameras are not expected to be added to AirPods for at least two or more years.
However, what could also happen is that AirPods could become much more significant in Apple's move into health. Apple is reportedly currently focused primarily on figuring out how to get AirPods to reliably measure heart rate.
Heart rate measurements are currently said to be more accurate on the Apple Watch than on the AirPods , but maybe not by much. It seems close enough that it could even be ready for the next version of the AirPods Pro. They are said to be in the early stages of development.
Apple is also reportedly working on adding temperature sensors to AirPods, as well as other unspecified physiological measurements.
The new health measures follow the addition of hearing testing to AirPods Pro 2 in 2024.
