Sleep apnea monitoring available for Brazilian Apple Watch users

Apple Watch users around the world, now including Brazil, can detect early signs of sleep apnea and take steps toward healthier sleep. Here's how it works.
Apple continues its commitment to making the watch a tool for preventive healthcare by introducing sleep apnea monitoring. Brazil celebrates approval from the Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria (ANVISA), and the feature is already available in more than 150 countries, including the US, Japan, and the EU.
Sleep apnea is a chronic condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, causing disturbances that can have serious consequences if left untreated. Undiagnosed cases can lead to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, often without understanding the cause.
Apple Watch tracks your wrist movements during sleep using the accelerometer, identifying patterns associated with abnormal breathing events. Advanced machine learning algorithms, trained on clinically validated sleep studies, analyze these disturbances.
While minor irregularities may be normal, recurring patterns over multiple nights may indicate sleep apnea, according to Apple.
Sleep Apnea Monitoring
Sleep Apnea Monitoring data is automatically recorded in the Health app on iPhone or iPad. Users can track breathing abnormalities over different time periods, including 30 days, six months, or one year.
If Apple Watch detects ongoing signs of moderate or severe sleep apnea, users are notified every 30 days. The alert acts as a prompt to take the next steps in assessing your sleep health.
Each notification includes a summary of sleep disturbances and educational materials about sleep apnea risks and treatment options. Users also receive a PDF report of their breathing data for the past three months, which helps them share information with their healthcare providers.
Apple's Sleep Apnea Detection uses advanced machine learning algorithms trained on clinically validated sleep studies. In one of Apple's largest clinical validation studies to date, the system reliably identified patterns of apnea in participants.
Availability and turning on notifications
Sleep apnea notifications are available on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. The feature is intended for users aged 18 and older who do not have a formal diagnosis of apnea.
To turn on sleep apnea monitoring on Apple Watch, first make sure both of your devices are up to date. Your Apple Watch must be running the latest version of watchOS, and your iPhone must be updated to the latest version of iOS.
Set up sleep tracking on your iPhone through the Health app. Open the app, tap Summary, then tap Sleep. If you don’t have a sleep schedule, create one to effectively track your sleep patterns.
Turn on sleep apnea monitoring after you set up sleep tracking. Go to the Respiratory Health or Sleep settings in the Health app and turn on the feature to detect irregular breathing patterns and send you sleep apnea notifications.
Wear your Apple Watch securely on your wrist while you sleep to collect accurate breathing data. View your recorded data in the Sleep or Respiratory Health sections of the Health app to see metrics and notifications for moderate to severe sleep apnea.
