Apple TV+ 'Wolves' Sequel Cancelled, Director Says

Apple TV+'s most-watched movie of all time, Wolves, is no longer getting a sequel. Despite the original's success, the next installment has reportedly been canceled.

Director Jon Watts says Wolves 2 is no longer moving forward

George Clooney and Brad Pitt lead Apple TV+'s most-watched movie of all time this fall. Before the film's release in September, a Wolf sequel was announced with Jon Watts, the director of the first film, set to helm the effort.

Just a couple months later, Watts says Wolf 2 won't be moving forward.

Here's the report from Collider:

While speaking with Collider's Steve Weintraub while promoting his new Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew… Watts opened up about his plans going forward and what's no longer on the horizon, saying, “I don't know what I'm going to direct next, and I don't think there'll be a Wolf sequel.”

“Wolfs 2” Seemed Doomed From the Start, Despite the Original's Success

A sequel to Wolves always seemed a little unlikely.

Yes, the original film was a hit for Apple in terms of audiences. But Apple's last-minute change in its theatrical release plans didn't bode well for its relationship with the creatives involved.

Wolves was originally set to have a wide theatrical release. But just weeks before its scheduled release, Apple announced a big change in strategy.

Instead of getting a wide theatrical release, Wolves will only get a limited theatrical release before launching on Apple TV+.

The news was buried in a press release announcing that Apple had greenlit a sequel, clearly an attempt to put a positive spin on bad news.

But it was noted before that for Clooney, Pitt, and director Watts, theatrical support was a big factor in the project initially being passed on to Apple. The tech giant’s last-minute cancellation likely took some heat from the creative team.

Despite its generally strong track record with TV shows, Apple has struggled to find a winning strategy with movies. The company is now reportedly planning for most of its films to go straight to Apple TV+ with limited theatrical debuts — much like Netflix’s strategy. One of the big upcoming exceptions will be 2025's F1, which the company hopes could be its first true summer blockbuster.

Update: Watts has now given Deadline further clarification, and it's as expected:

I loved working with Brad and George… and I'd happily do it again. But the truth is, Apple didn't cancel the Wolfs sequel, I did because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner.
