Apple filed images of the next-generation CarPlay with the EU Intellectual Property Office this month as it seeks to protect the design of the upcoming software system there. The images show a variety of designs for the next-generation CarPlay dashboard and interface, including several featuring what appears to be the logo of German carmaker Audi. Apple has already shown off what next-generation CarPlay looks like several times, so there’s nothing in the images we haven’t seen before, but the timing of the filings is notable. Apple’s website still says the first cars with next-generation CarPlay will “arrive in 2024,” but hasn’t yet given a more specific timeline. Aston Martin and Porsche have announced the next generation of CarPlay cars for December 2023, but neither automaker has yet to release a single car with support.
With just over a month left in the year, some are starting to wonder whether Apple will meet its stated 2024 deadline for the next generation of CarPlay. So it's encouraging to see that Apple is still working on the launch behind the scenes.
