Apple has updated its AirPods Max with USB-C and new color options in September 2024, but reportedly has no plans for any further changes to the earbuds.
In Apple’s latest product updates, the chip inside the AirPods Max failed to upgrade to the H2 chip like it did with the AirPods Pro, meaning the headset is still incompatible with Adaptive Audio.
Bloomberg claims the company has “no concrete plans” to update the headphone hardware again, at least for now. While the product doesn’t appear to be in danger of being canceled, there are currently no plans for future product revisions.
The AirPods Max will continue to be made and sold, but Apple reportedly believes that sales of the headset are too low to justify devoting resources to significant hardware updates. That doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of firmware changes, but Apple’s interest in the product appears to be waning.
The AirPods Max were originally released in 2020 and, aside from recent color changes and a switch to a USB-C connector, are unchanged from the original version. They offer up to 20 hours of battery life, active noise cancellation, and a “digital crown” control mechanism.
While it was praised for its sound isolation and overall reliability, there were concerns about the tendency for sweat and other condensation to accumulate under the ear pads after extended use. However, the ear pads can be removed for easy cleaning.
