The iPhone 17 lineup could feature a redesigned iPhone that's only about 6mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone ever. Here's what we know so far.
Well ahead of the iPhone 16 lineup's September 2024 release, rumors of an iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air have begun to surface.
Apple is reportedly looking to replace its existing Plus lineup with a redesigned iPhone 17 Slim featuring a 6.6-inch display, ProMotion, and a single rear camera. However, the most notable feature of the upcoming iPhone is its thickness.
Compared to the current iPhone 16 Plus, which is 7.8mm thick, the iPhone 17 Slim will allegedly have a body that is just 6mm thick. That would make the device thinner than any iPhone Apple has released so far, though it wouldn’t be the thinnest Apple device ever. That honor goes to the 2024 iPad Pro with the M4 chip, which is just 5.1mm thick.
As first spotted by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu believes that this will be the case. Pu has previously provided other details about the upcoming iPhone 17 Slim, saying in October 2024 that it would have a 6.6-inch display.
Multiple sources, including analysts Ross Young, Ming-Chi Kuo, leaker Ice Universe, and others, have reported that a similar device is in the works, lending more credibility to the claim.
Apple may opt to use a titanium-aluminum alloy for the iPhone 17 Slim to prevent bending. The iPhone 6, which is currently still the thinnest iPhone ever made, was prone to bending in people’s pockets, with some users even calling the phenomenon “buckling.”
As for why the iPhone 17 Slim isn’t thinner than the iPad Pro, one rumor from October 2024 suggests that the battery is to blame. Apple is allegedly not using the newer battery technology it originally developed for the phone. However, this claim comes from a user with a controversial reputation, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Aside from the changed dimensions, the iPhone 17 Slim is also expected to feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera. The device could also get Apple’s next-generation A19 chip with improved efficiency and thermal management, as well as a thinner resin-coated copper logic board.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to feature the A19 Pro chip with TSMC's modern 2nm process technology and 12GB of RAM. The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be unveiled in September 2025.
