Apple Pay officially launched in Paraguay

Apple Pay has officially launched in Paraguay.

Paraguay has become the latest country to support Apple Pay, according to a recent blog post from Mastercard. Here's what you need to know.

Apple Pay lets you make payments on your iPhone without using a physical card. While Apple’s contactless payment method has been available in the United States for more than a decade, it’s just now launching in Paraguay.

As originally spotted by 9to5mac, Mastercard announced that cards issued by Banco Continental, Itau, and Ueno Bank can be added to Apple Wallet and used with Apple Pay. The company announced the move in a blog post highlighting the benefits of Apple Pay’s launch for users.

“We’re excited to work with our issuers to bring the simplicity, security, and privacy of Apple Pay to consumers in Paraguay,” said Federico Kofman, Mastercard’s head of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. “This launch reaffirms Mastercard’s commitment to providing innovative solutions that empower people to choose how they want to pay.”

Apple Pay’s global availability has grown significantly over the past few years. In 2023, the service became available in Chile, South Korea, and Vietnam, and in 2021, the feature debuted in Colombia and Costa Rica.

While Apple Pay will likely become available in more countries in the near future, there is still much to do for Apple's contactless payment method and even Apple Wallet as a whole. The future of Apple Wallet could see a digital car key appear in rental cars, among other things.

In an October 2024 interview, Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, shared key insights about the future of the services and their great success in transportation apps, where Apple Pay is used for bus and train tickets.

Eventually, Apple wants to completely replace the physical wallet with a virtual one, the idea being that users will have their cards, car keys, driver's license, and ID cards in the Apple Wallet app. There's still a long way to go, though, as Apple Pay isn't yet accepted in all parts of the world.
