Add intelligent coding assistance to Apple's Xcode with the GitHub Copilot extension, now in public preview for Copilot license holders.
Don't confuse GitHub Copilot with Microsoft's AI, which is an AI-powered developer tool for use in IDEs. GitHub Copilot can provide code suggestions and developer assistance through a chat tool with access to GitHub repositories.
According to GitHub's announcement, Copilot will be coming to Xcode as an extension. Copilot license holders can access the public preview and install it by following the getting started guide.
There are several features available in the public preview.
- Code completion
- Support for multiple languages, such as Swift and Objective-C
- Multi-line suggestions
- Content filtering
- Block suggestions that match public code
Apple already includes an AI-powered tool in Xcode called Swift Assist. It offers predictive code completion for coding in Swift and using the Apple SDK, so it's a more specific tool than GitHub Copilot.
The ability to add GitHub Copilot to Xcode will be a boon for developers looking to get AI help on problems outside of Swift. Apple and GitHub's tools will continue to improve and help developers focus on high-level problems.
