The App Store Will Soon Be Able to Offer AI-Powered User Review Digests of Apps

The App Store may soon feature AI-generated user review summaries for apps.

The App Store may soon feature AI-generated user review summaries for apps. Here's what we know about the feature so far.

On Monday, Apple released iOS 18.1, which made Apple Intelligence available to the general public. With Apple Intelligence, you can now get summaries of your emails, messages, and notifications using Apple's generative AI software.

Now, it looks like the iOS App Store will be getting a similar feature that will allow it to generate AI summaries of app user reviews. While there’s no clear indication of what these summaries will ultimately look like, we do know quite a few details about them.

As initially spotted by 9to5mac, Apple’s review summaries will likely appear alongside app descriptions and screenshots when users browse an app’s main App Store page. Information related to these new AI-powered summaries was reportedly found on an unspecified App Store page.

If an app has enough user reviews, Apple will generate a summary that highlights the most common customer reviews associated with the specific app.

The company’s new App Store review summaries will be updated every time an app receives a new review from a user. Developers will also be able to report summaries that they find inaccurate.

Apple is using AI models for more than just consumer apps

It’s worth noting, however, that these app review summaries will only be available in certain countries and regions, though it’s unclear which ones. The end goal of these summaries is to provide users with a clear picture of an app’s reviews to help them decide whether or not to buy or install a particular app.

While there are currently no details on how the summaries themselves will be generated, Apple will likely use internal variants of its existing large language models for enterprise tasks like these. The snippet provided in the report doesn’t talk about AI-generated summaries, but given the feature’s description and country availability, it’s likely powered by generative AI technology.

An app could have a summary that highlights the most common reviews and customer sentiments in user reviews of the app. The summaries are updated as new reviews are added. Digests are available in some countries and regions, and for apps with enough reviews to provide a Digest. They appear on the app’s product page. If a Digest is inaccurate or has another issue, you can report the issue.

In one of our previous reports, we described how internal apps and environments were used to test Apple’s Ajax LLM in pre-release versions of Apple’s operating systems. These test apps were used when Apple Intelligence was still in development, then codenamed Project Greymatter.

Apple’s App Store Digest may be coming in the near future, as references to the feature can already be found in the App Store API. The company is adding more and more AI-related features with each new iOS 18 update. The iOS 18.2 developer beta recently introduced support for Image Playground and Visual Intelligence on the iPhone 16.
