What You Might Have Missed From Monday's M4 iMac Unveiling

iMac gets Apple's M4 chip.

The 24-inch iMac has been updated with the M4, but more than just the chip update was revealed on Monday. Here's what you might have missed.

Apple has shown off a simple spec update for the 24-inch iMac, which now features the M4 chip previously found only in the iPad Pro.

While the new iMac is not visibly different from its M3-based predecessor, the computer does get some significant hardware improvements. Some of Apple’s accessories have also gotten a small update.

The new M4-powered iMac supports 8K display output at 120Hz

The more powerful 10-core GPU configurations of the new and improved iMac support 8K display output at 120Hz to a single external display, something that hasn’t been possible on any Mac before.

Alternatively, with the new iMac, users also have the option to connect two 6K displays with a 60Hz refresh rate instead of a single 8K 120Hz display. A significant upgrade over the previous external display limitations of the base M-series chipsets.

Entry-level Mac computers like the iMac and MacBook Air with Apple Silicon typically only support one external display unless a DisplayLink adapter is used. The only exceptions in this regard are the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the M3, which can use two external displays, albeit only with the device’s lid closed.

Future Macs with similar hardware configurations will also likely support the same display output types, as Apple is expected to unveil more M4-based computers during its announcement week.

The Mac Pro Now Comes with USB-C Accessories

While the focus of Monday's announcements was undoubtedly on the iMac, Apple also introduced small updates to its existing accessories — the Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse.

The updated Magic accessories are included with the new iMac with the M4 chip or the existing Mac Pro. While the Mac Pro didn't get a hardware update like the iMac, it did get updated peripherals.

The Magic Mouse's charging port is still on the bottom.

The new accessories now charge via USB-C, while previous versions had a Lightning port. The Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse are also available for purchase separately.

However, the USB-C charging port for the updated Magic Mouse is still located on the bottom of the device, which has proven unpopular with users.

More Mac-related announcements are scheduled for the rest of the week, as the MacBook Pro and Mac mini are expected to receive the M4 chip. Also on Monday, Apple released iOS 18.1, which finally makes some Apple Intelligence features available to the general public.
