Apple is testing an app to monitor human blood sugar levels

Monitoring Glucose on Apple Watch with the Dexcom App

Apple is still working on something to help fight diabetes, a report claims the company is internally testing an app that will help people monitor their blood sugar levels.

Apple has long been rumored to be working on ways to monitor a user’s blood sugar levels using hardware like the Apple Watch. While work on a non-invasive sensor continues, the company is also exploring other ways to combat diabetes.

Employees who were pre-diabetic were involved in testing an app developed by Apple, sources tell Bloomberg. They had their blood tested to determine whether they were at risk for type 2 diabetes, and their condition was monitored with various blood-testing devices throughout the testing period.

The app was also used to record food, blood sugar levels, and changes in glucose levels relative to food intake.

Apple apparently has no intention of releasing the app to the public, as its purpose was to collect data rather than pilot an actual app for release. It was also made for Apple to figure out what other uses there might be for blood sugar data and what tools could be created for public use.

The iPhone maker has since paused testing the app as it focuses on other health-related areas.

So far, the app testing does not appear to be directly related to its ongoing work to create a needle-free glucose meter. Such a device could offer an expanded set of features for the Apple Watch, especially when routine tests require finger pricks or more advanced systems like Dexcom.
