How to Change the iPhone You're Using with iPhone Mirroring

iPhone Screen Mirroring is available on macOS 15 Sequoia and iOS 18.

macOS 15 Sequoia and iOS 18 software updates let you control your iPhone from your Mac maybe, but choosing between multiple iPhones can be confusing. Here's how to do it.

We're big fans of being able to use your mouse and keyboard to control iPhone apps, but what if you upgrade to a new iPhone and you find that your Mac is still trying to connect to your old one. Don't worry, switching iPhones is easy, and we're going to walk you through the process right here.

How to Change the iPhone You Use with macOS iPhone Mirroring

We've already shown you how to use iPhone Mirroring on your own iPhone and Mac, but with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, people may need to update their settings. Macs continue to connect to the previously set up iPhone until told otherwise, so updating to a new iPhone requires some changes.

  1. Open the System Preferences app on your Mac running macOS 15 Sequoia.
  2. Select Desktop & Dock.
  3. Scroll down to the Widgets section and select the iPhone you want from the iPhone drop-down menu.

Note that this option will only appear if you have more than one iPhone registered to your Apple ID.

Troubleshooting When iPhone Mirroring Won't Connect

Apple's iPhone Mirroring feature performed well in our testing, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. There are a few things you can try if your Mac isn't connecting to your iPhone reliably, beyond the standard “turn it off and on again” approach we're all so familiar with.

  1. Unlock your iPhone, then lock it again.
  2. Quit the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac and launch it again.
  3. Make sure your Mac and iPhone are running the latest versions of macOS and iOS, respectively.
  4. Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on on your Mac and iPhone.
  5. Disable any VPNs that may be running on your Mac or iPhone.
  6. Deauthorize your Mac from connecting to your iPhone.
  7. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  8. Select General.
  9. Select AirPlay & Continuity options.
  10. Tap iPhone Mirroring.
  11. Swipe left on your Mac's name and select Remove.
  12. Restart your iPhone and Mac before trying to connect using iPhone Mirroring again.

iPhone Mirroring can be a great way to use apps that aren't available on your Mac or iPad while still using things like your mouse and keyboard. The feature works wirelessly, so you don't have to deal with tangled cables, either. As an added bonus, you can continue to use your iPhone's standby feature while accessing your apps and data through iPhone Mirroring.

All Macs with the M1 or later chip and Macs with Apple's T2 security chip support iPhone Mirroring. All iPhones that support iOS 18 also support the feature.
