iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 beta 7s roll out as public release approaches

Apple Intelligence in action.

Apple Intelligence testing continues as the anticipated release approaches, with the seventh developer builds of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 now available.

The seventh developer betas of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 come after the sixth developer betas of their respective builds, as well as the fourth builds of visionOS 2.1, tvOS 18.1, and watchOS 11.1, which were released on October 7.

The difference in the number of builds is due to Apple beta testing tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 at the same time as iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 with Apple Intelligence support. There were two beta tracks for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, covering versions 18 and 18.1.

Apple typically includes macOS Sequoia 15.1 with iOS and iPadOS, but this build was not included at the time of publication.

The new iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 build numbers are 22B5075a.

The main difference between iOS 18.1 and 18 is the addition of Apple Intelligence, which includes generative AI and machine learning features. However, not all Apple Intelligence features will be available when they are eventually released.

The initial Apple Intelligence features tested included new Siri animations, Type to Siri, better query understanding and contextual awareness, product knowledge, and a range of writing tools.

The third developer beta brought with it a feature called Clean Up for Photos, which allows users to remove unwanted elements from images.

In the fifth build, Apple's iOS 18.1 changes mostly had nothing to do with Apple Intelligence. Changes included enabling drag-and-drop file sharing with iPhone Mirroring in macOS, a new Selfie option for controlling the camera, and adjustments to Control Center.

The sixth build of iOS 18.1 focused on sleep apnea detection, connectivity, and measurement toggles in Control Center, and other features, rather than specifically Apple Intelligence.

AppleInsider and Apple strongly discourage users from installing test operating systems or other beta or RC software on “mission-critical” or primary hardware due to the low likelihood of issues that could result in data loss. Testers should therefore use secondary or non-primary devices and ensure they have adequate backups of any mission-critical data.
