Apple Opens New iPhone and Vision Pro Testing and Development Lab in Shenzhen, China, with plans for 1,000 employees.

As first announced during construction in July 2024, the new research center is part of the company's expanding R&D efforts in China. According to the South China Morning Post, the new lab opened on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Located in Shenzhen's Hetao Park, about seven miles from the Apple Holiday Plaza Shenzhen store, the lab currently covers 215,000 square feet. Expected to expand later, the lab is part of the Greater Bay Area Regional Economic Development Center.

It is believed to be designed for testing and research related to the company's core products, specifically the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. It is unclear how many employees currently work at the lab, but it is reportedly planned to eventually hire more than 1,000 people.

Shenzhen has long been home to Apple's key manufacturing partners in China. Apple has also been conducting research and development in the city since around 2017.

The new research lab comes at a time when Apple is increasingly moving its manufacturing out of China and into new facilities in countries like India and Vietnam.

However, a recent fire at a key plant in India may force Apple to shift some iPhone production back to China.
