Apple's Secret 3D Camera Resurfaces in 'Underwater'

Apple 3D Cinema Camera [Apple]

The Apple 3D Cinema Camera used to record immersive video was detailed with a setup capable of recording 8K resolution video for the Apple Vision Pro.

On Thursday, Apple released Submerged, a 16-minute short film that can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro. A day later, details emerged about the Apple camera used to film the immersive video.

The camera, which has yet to be named, is billed as a stereoscopic device capable of capturing spatial content for the Apple Vision Pro. According to YMCinema, which uses patents as a starting point, it is an Apple-designed imaging device that uses a pair of large sensors capable of recording at up to 8K resolution across a 180-degree field of view.

As with the name, Apple did not provide specifications, availability, or pricing information for the hardware.

The sensors are believed to be equivalent in size to Micro-Four-Thirds or Super 35. That is generally considered large for sensors, let alone for stereoscopic recording.

The camera also features a microphone array that can record multi-directional audio. This is especially useful for recording spatial audio to enhance the visual experience.

This isn’t the first time the camera has appeared in public. In May, images of the cameras surfaced on Reddit, showing the setups being used to capture footage from an MLS game.

While Apple has been slow to release the camera itself, videographers have other options available. The best is arguably the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive Camera, part of Blackmagic’s comprehensive immersive video solution.
