Amazon Prime users will be offered an Apple TV+ package

Tim Cook to announce Apple TV+ in 2019

Amazon Prime Video subscribers in the U.S. will soon be able to add Apple TV+, expanding the reach of Apple's streaming service.

A year after the company raised the price of Apple TV+ from $6.99 a month to $9.99 a month, Apple is now trying to put it in the hands and on the remotes of more viewers. Amazon announced that subscribers to its own streaming service in the U.S. will be able to add Apple TV+ — for the same $9.99 a month.

“We want to make Apple TV+ and its award-winning library of shows and movies from the world’s greatest storytellers available to as many viewers as possible,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that Prime Video will now offer Apple TV+, giving viewers an incredible range of viewing options.”

There may still be some smart TVs with the Amazon Prime Video app but not the Apple TV+ app. Otherwise, virtually anywhere viewers can get Amazon Prime, they can already get Apple TV+.

So, given that there is no cost savings for the viewer, Amazon presents it as an advantage that they don’t have to download a separate app.

However, Apple is right that this makes its shows available to more viewers, as Amazon has an estimated 115 million viewers in the US. But Amazon itself says that Prime Video viewers have the option of “more than 100 additional subscription options in the US.”

As such, Apple TV+ will still be a small player among many other options. The move may also run counter to Apple’s ambitions to make the Apple TV app one central hub for all streamers, although Netflix continues to resist this.

Amazon Prime Video starts at $8.99 per month, so the total cost for the two services is $18.98. Amazon says Apple TV+ will launch on its platform by the end of October 2024.

Please note that users who subscribe to Apple One already receive Apple TV+, and it cannot be removed.
