Former Apple Hardware Chief and Current Apple Vision Pro Lead Retires

Dan Riccio

Dan Riccio was a key executive at Apple during the Steve Jobs and Tim Cook eras, and he is retiring after leading Apple's Vision Pro team.

John Ternus has taken over as senior vice president of hardware engineering after Dan Riccio stepped down from the role. Riccio continued to report to Tim Cook as the vice president leading Apple’s Vision Pro team, but he’s now set to retire.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Dan Riccio is set to retire soon. Mike Rockwell will take over day-to-day operations of the Apple Vision Pro team, with control handed over to John Ternus.

Dan Riccio has had an incredible impact on Apple since joining the company in 1998. He became senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2012 and helped introduce products like the AirPods and iPad Pro, but was also the mastermind behind projects like the ill-fated Apple Car.

While some might call Riccio’s departure a bad sign for Apple’s Vision Pro performance or its future, that’s an extremely unlikely conclusion. The reality is that Apple has demonstrated a pattern of softening executive retirements with smaller roles before they eventually leave — as in the case of Jony Ive or Phil Schiller.

Dan Riccio spent 26 years at Apple and had a very successful career. As always in these stories, retirement is inevitable for someone over 60, and it usually doesn’t involve some kind of failure, but rather a story of success and wealth, especially at Apple.
